Territory
Grenoble is a french city, at the foot of the Alpes where the river Drac joins the Isère. Located in the Rhône-Alpes region, Grenoble is, with its 156 000 inhabitants, the capital of the department of Isère. The proximity of the mountains, as well as its size, has led to the city being known in France as the "Capital of the Alps".
Grenoble is one of territory the most innovative of France thanks to its model of development built on a historic partnership between the university, the research and the industry which began in 19th century with the hydropower ("the hydroelectricity"), and continued post-war year thanks to the support of 3 strong personalities of the industry and the research : Louis Merlin, Louis Weil and Louis Néel. Grenoble made a commitment around 3 expanding sectors today:
- the micro-nanotechnologies and the software
- the biotechnologies and the sciences of the alive
- the new technologies of the energy
The attractiveness and the competitiveness of the ecosystem from Grenoble rest on its scientific pole’s excellence, on the grouping in one and same place of big European research’s instruments and on the very strong synergy between companies and research’s actors.
Grenoble is also rich in a diversified industrial fabric where the traditional sectors from Grenoble (mechanics, chemistry) always play a dominating role in the economic fabric and the local employment.
